Compensation Program

The Bowdoin College compensation program is designed to attract, retain, and reward a highly qualified and diverse workforce.

We begin by offering competitive market-based pay, and we support that pay with other benefits and perks, such as a positive work environment, a generous benefits package, support for career development, and flexibility. This compensation program helps differentiate Bowdoin from other employers not only in Maine, but also in the Northeast in general.

The compensation program establishes a job description, career level, and competitive market rate for every staff position at Bowdoin. This new structure is built around the belief that Bowdoin will have a fair, equitable, and financially sustainable program that provides a level of transparency and understanding of compensation for all staff. The new structure delivers:

  • Competitive, market-based pay
  • Alignment of pay, addressing compression and performance
  • Clarity on the opportunities for moving from one role to another and its impact on pay
  • Internal equity across pay grades
  • Clear and consistent processes for pay decisions
